Wedding and Event in Sicily “The Godfather” style
There are many towns in Sicily where life has literally stopped: here it goes the same way as it was several decades ago. Among such cities Savoca and Fortsa D’Agro, where the movie “The Godfather” was made. But there are also those where tourists practically don’t come. Including due to dangerous serpentines. And this is perhaps one of the most interesting places on the island, where our guests can see the real life of the island.
Here on the streets you can see the well-known typical picture: the company of grandfathers in coppols (traditional men’s caps, which, by the way, are now back in fashion, and which are familiar to us from the movie “The Godfather”), who talk loudly, play dominoes, swear sing songs and gesticulate. All these attributes can be used to create the atmosphere of the movie The Godfather for your wedding. After all, wedding of Apollonia and Michael Corleone took place in Savoca. Do you remember the scene when they leave the church and go down with all the guests to the festive table? By the way, the priest did not allow the shooting of the film inside the church, so the plot develops already “after the wedding.
Imagine, how life of a small town can change suddenly! Savoca, previously unknown to anyone, is located at an altitude of 330 meters above sea level, and the inhabitants here are only about 1,600 people. Once upon a time, Francis Ford Coppola came to Sicily to see the locations for the filming of his legendary movie. His goal was to visit the town Corleone, where the scenario of “The Godfather” develops according to the script.
When the director arrived in this town, he did not like it at all- It was not beautiful enough, not so romantic, atmospheric and colorful. Then one friend advised him to see the village near Taormina, where a stunning panorama opens. Francis Ford Coppola followed the advice and, arriving in Savoca, marveled at it’s beauty. So he decided to shoot there.
At that time the famous Vitelli bar still did not has signs, and the owner was a young woman (according to the plot of the film, the owner-father of Apollonia with the surname Vitelli). The Director came to the woman and asked what fee she wants so they could shoot in her bar. She didn’t speak English, so he gave her a piece of paper and asked to write the sum on it. The wise owner wrote only “Grazie !!!” (Thank you!), because she perfectly understood that in the future this place would become legendary and the bar would not end tourists. And it happened! A Vitelli sign has appeared over the bar since then, and you can also come to have coffee at the same table where another scene of the film was shot – the young Al Pacino, Michael Corleone, asked Apollonia’s hand to her father.
There is even a local celebrity lives in Savoca. An ordinary resident of the town, whom the director asked to play the role of the mother of Apollonia. She appears during the wedding…
