How interesting and suddenly can change the life of the town!
Like it was in Savoca…
The altitude of town is 330 meters above the sea level, and the inhabitants are only about 1,600 people. It was a town unknown to anyone.
Once Francis Ford Coppola came to Sicily to see the place for legendary film. His goal it was to visit the Corleone town.
When the Director came to this town, he did not like it at all – it was not enough beautiful, romantic, atmospheric and colorful. So one of his friends advised to see a village near Taormina with a stunning panorama. Francis Ford Coppola followed the advice and arrived to Savoca, marveled at it’s beauty. He decided to have movie’s shootings here.
At that time the sign at the famous Vitteli bar was not there, and the owner was a young woman. In the story of the film the owner is the father of Apollonia, Vitteli. The Director came to the woman and asked how much money does she want to allow the shootings. The woman did not speak English, so Francis gave her a piece of paper and asked to write the amount. The wise owner has written ” Grazie.” (Thanks!). Maybe she realized that in the future this place will become legendary and the bar will be full of tourists. And it happened! Since then the bar took a sign Vitteli. You too can come and drink coffee at the same table where the young Al Pacino, Vito Corleone, asked for the hand of Appolonia.
A local celebrity also lives in Savoca! The resident of a town was playing the role of Apollonia’s mother during the famouse wedding in movie. This moment with wedding took place in Savoca! Do you remember when the big family descends from the Church of St. Lucia to the wedding table? By the way the priest was not allowed to have a shooting inside the Church, so the story continues already “after the wedding”.
